CRAFT PROJECTS – NATIVITY STORIES – CAROL SINGING – ADVENT PLAY
ADVENT – 20 pages: Two weeks of detailed lesson plans with mentoring comments and short Advent Stories are illustrated with examples of blackboards and bookwork, a verse for St Nicholas, an Advent poem to act out in parts, and a letter of information to the parents.
The free supplement of poems and songs is an editable template which includes sheet music, footnotes and attributions. Customise it for your cultural setting, or use it to teach English as a foreign language.
This chapter shows a meaningful way of celebrating the time before Christmas in class, meeting the children’s need for reverence and worship in a free and non-dogmatic way. Songs, daily stories and seasonal craft projects take up Central European Christian traditions, but these can easily be replaced with elements of other regions and faiths.

While we celebrate Advent together as a school, each class holds that reverent expectant space through December. This is a lovely resource particularly for those who want to bring the Christian stories to life in their class room. I personally make a point of bringing in other cultures’ festivals of lights over the years, and this gives me non-dogmatic stories that are just right for this age of children. As a mentor I don’t often suggest ‘open and follow’ resources as they don’t ring true and always feel a little shallow, but having these sorts of stories and activities for festivals when there is so much else happening in the classroom is a great gift. Whether you are going to use a little or a lot, this is well worth having, ready to pull out.
