ADVENT – 30 pages: Two-and-a-half weeks of editable lesson plans with mentoring comments and short Advent stories are illustrated with samples of the children’s notes to St Nicholas, seasonal craftwork and paintings, the Paradise Poem from the Bible Stories block, and an Advent poem to act out in parts.

The free supplement of poems and songs is an editable template which includes sheet music, footnotes and attributions. Customise it for your cultural setting, or use it to teach English as a foreign language.

This chapter shows one way of celebrating Advent in class and meeting the children’s need for reverence and worship in a non-dogmatic way. Songs, stories and seasonal craft projects take up Central European Christian traditions, but these can be customised for other regions and faiths. The children write a personal message to St Nicholas, sew a decorative bird for the Christmas tree and make a seasonal card for the family. They rehearse a long poem to perform to the community, and dramatize a short poem independently in teamwork.
