SAINT MARTIN– READING & SPELLING – WRITING & RIDDLES– SEASONAL CRAFTS
ANIMAL FABLES – 50 pages: Four weeks of daily lesson plans with mentoring comments are illustrated with samples of blackboards, bookwork, painting, modelling, spelling exercises, riddles, and a letter of information to the parents. One week is dedicated to preparing for a Lantern Walk in honour of St Martin; three weeks focus on spelling, writing, reading and the moral message of animal fables, collected in a self-made Fable Reader and a Word Families booklet.
The free supplement of poems and songs is an editable template which includes sheet music, footnotes and attributions. Customise it for your cultural setting, or use it to teach English as a foreign language.
This chapter shows how to develop literacy skills with a group of mixed abilities, so that readers are not bored and non-readers not stressed. Animal fables appeal to the moral sense while humorous riddles develop the mind. Spelling is practised with a circle activity, Word Families and a Fable Reader. Songs, poems and lanterns for Martinmas honour the school year’s second saint, and a craft project rounds off this block that sees every child make good progress in literacy at their individual level.

Such a great resource for this grade! I’ve done second grade twice before as a homeschool mom, but it had been a few years, so this was very helpful in my planning. My youngest loves the songs and verses that are also included (and I enjoy learning new ones).
