This first block of Farming shows how the loss of Paradise leads to the necessity of making a life on earth with the toil of one’s hands. Our Michaelmas harvest festival provides a natural transition from the esoteric stories of Genesis to the practical topic of farming. We harvest fruit and grain, learn how to press apple juice, bake apple crumble and thresh self-grown wheat with songs and poems that bring the farmer’s work alive in the classroom. We study the horse-drawn plough and visit a ploughing match to see it in action.
(A second Farming block at the end of the year focuses on farm animals and their care.)
