This chapter shows how we explore the quality of numbers to let the children connect with each one in turn in a meaningful way. In keeping with the logical nature of arithmetic, several stories introduce the four basic operations with scholarly knights and bean counters. No gnomes here! Instead, a sense for this subject’s logical and non-imaginative nature is developed on an intuitive level from the very beginning.

Even if you have another Waldorf Grade 1 curriculum, this is well worth purchasing! Beginning my Waldorf-inspired homeschooling journey, I purchased a couple of the popular (US-based) curriculums. I found the math blocks lacking in depth; presented a decent story but not much to work with after to develop math skills. Additionally the 4-process gnome stories that so many waldorf curriculums use were not working for our family and I sought out something different. We grew tired of all the gnome stories in early childhood where they were rather ubiquitous (and seemingly forced). I was THRILLED at the captivating knight stories and purchased the block just for those. I was pleasantly surprised by how packed this block was with number sense activities (that I’ve not seen elsewhere). The activities are so purposeful, fun and easy to implement. It is clear the author has put great effort in professional math development. I’ve since purchased more math blocks and they build beautifully (again are more robust and innovative than what’s “out there”). I also appreciate the affordability of the blocks, making Waldorf education more accessible.

My child LOVED the 4 process stories and I appreciated the very thorough, yet succinct and to the point, guidance and support as a homeschool teacher.
