COMBUSTION PROCESS VARIOUS EXPERIMENTS ACIDS AND ALKALIS HYDROGEN & OXYGEN

CHEMISTRY 48 pages: Two weeks of detailed lesson plans with mentoring comments, presentation notes, descriptions of experiments, data collection, reading, compositions, examples of bookwork, the history of early chemistry, and the block test.

The free supplement of a famous chemistry song and some classical poems with different topics is an editable template which includes sheet music, footnotes and attributions.

Introducing the basics of a new subject, this chapter begins with essential rules and equipment of the laboratory, and “the first question of chemistry”. Experiments are carried out, observations written in a notebook, data is collected, the transition from alchemy to chemistry narrated. Step by step, a scientific theory popular as “the truth” for over a hundred years is disproved in a process that reveals how science advances through trial and error. Indicators, acids and alkalis are explored next, copper sulphate crystals are produced, and the combustible nature of oxygen and hydrogen is tested.

This is an excellent, approachable chemistry curriculum that includes real discovery, observations. It guides you seamlessly through foundational lab safety before diving into classic, exciting experiments. It includes presentation notes, observations and comments/lesson pages from students. The narrative approach to presenting exactly what happens in the classroom (like in the other blocks from Waldorf Diary) paint a vivid picture in my mind that I can recreate at home and have the confidence to make my own. Thank you, Waldorf Diary, for another excellent, well thought out guide!

A very useful handbook for chemistry lessons at a Waldorf school or homeschooling. It contains many useful ideas and tips. It takes us all the way from the beginning of alchemy and introduces us to real chemistry through stories, while following the development of the child. The experiments are clearly described and understandable even to us who are not chemists by education. The material is richly illustrated, covers the structure of the entire lesson and at the same time allows for reflection on the student’s and teacher’s work.
